Alvin E. Heckenlaible, age 82 of Menno, S.D., passed away early Monday morning (Nov. 18, 2002) at the Freeman Community Hospital, Freeman, S.D.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 22, 2002, at Grace Lutheran Church, Menno, with the Rev. LeRoy Stadem officiating. Burial will be in the Menno Cemetery with military graveside rites by Rames-Bender American Legion No. 152. Pallbearers will be Albert Orth, William Scheibe, Martin Kubal, Glen Hoerth, Carrol Langland and Harland Danielsen. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, at the Aisenbrey-Kostel Funeral Home, Menno, S.D., with the family present at 7 p.m. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.

Alvin E. Heckenlaible was born Feb. 17, 1920, on a farm in Hutchinson County to Edward and Emma (Edelman) Heckenlaible. Alvin was baptized on Aug. 8, 1920, by the Rev. Langholz and was confirmed in June 1934 by the Rev. Heuer. He attended Knodel School eight years. He graduated from Menno High School in 1938. He attended Southern State Teachers College for one year and taught rural schools for three years.

Alvin was united in marriage to Loarine Davis of Scotland, S.D., on April 29, 1941. Three children were born to Alvin and Loarine: Daryl (Janet), Carol (Delmore-deceased) Wollman and Galen.

Alvin was drafted into the Army in 1942 and was discharged in 1945. He saw action in the European Theatre. Upon his release, he decided to become a farmer which was his lifelong occupation mainly at a farm six miles east of Menno.

Throughout the years, Alvin was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, and served on the church council and was involved in Veterans of Foreign Wars, disabled Veterans and served as Mayor of Menno for several terms and the American Legion in Menno.

Alvin passed away on Nov. 18, 2002, at the Freeman Community Hospital after being a patient there for about two weeks.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, one brother and son-in-law.

He is survived by his wife, Loarine of 61 years; three children; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Hildegard Bezug; and one brother, Edmund. The grandchildren are Lorie (Kent) Lehr, Todd (Lori) Heckenlaible, Amy (Scott) Nusz and Greg Wollman. The great-grandchildren are Dylan, Dustin, Derrick and Dominick Lehr, Cole and Levi Heckenlaible and Adrian Nusz.
