Emigrant ancestors arrived in Virginia in 1685. Ephraim Fuqua, 4th generation American born, 1790 in Virginia. In 1687 Guillaume (William) Fuqua married Jane Eyre, a Virginian of English descent; around 1738 their son Ralph, born 1713 in Charles City County, obtained land in Bedford County, Virginia. Ralph and his son Joseph, born 1755, fought in the American revolution. An historic walled cemetery in Bedford commemorates Joseph's 1782 land donation for establishing the county seat. Ralph married Priscilla Owen in 1734; Joseph wed Celia Bondurant in 1778.

Three of Joseph's sons, Ephraim, Silas (father of Galba who at 16 died at the Alamo) and Benjamin came first to Alabama then to Austin's Colony in 1828, settling at Lynchburg Ferry at the Buffalo Bayou-San Jacinto river confluence. In 1830 Silas and Benjamin joined the DeWitt's Colony.
