"Bernie" was born Jan. 2, 1935, in Deer Lodge in St. Joseph's Hospital to Earl and Ruperta "Ruby" Wales. Bernie was raised in Helmville on the Wales ranch, one of eight children. Bernie's years in Helmville made up some of her fondest memories. Bernie attended high school in Missoula at Sacred Heart Academy. She then went on to college at St. Mary's College in Leavenworth, Kan. Bernie returned to Montana to marry her sweetheart, Rodney Peter "Pete" Senecal, on Oct. 1, 1955, in Helmville in St. Thomas' Church. Pete and Bernie were blessed to have nine children. Bernie's life was centered around her own children, her many nieces and nephews, and the children of Elliston.
She worked enthusiastically at Head Start, Frontier Town, as a teacher's aide at Elliston School, babysitting and planting trees. The friends she made while tree planting were lifelong. She treasured the friendships of her cousins, Margie, Rose Marie and Pauline. Bernie considered everyone she met a friend. Bernie loved April Fools Day, playing her piano and dancing. Gram is fondly remembered by her 18 grandchildren. Her little "huckle-buckles" were very dear to her.
She is survived by her sisters, Dede (Glen) Cook, Joan (Frank) Pope, and Shirley Wales; in-laws, George Larson and Esther Wales; children, Amy (Pat) Riehl, Mike Senecal, Ed (Terry) Senecal, Dodie (Mike) Rennfield, Millie (Ed) Johnson, Suzette (Cary) Focht, and Annie (Jed) Evjene; grandchildren, Joe Riehl, Heidi (John) Foreman, Betsy (Jake) Williams, Lathe and Sage Senecal, Tara and Tesa Senecal, Tyler, Ivy and Riley Rennfield, Seth, Shelby, Sutton and Sawyer Johnson, Curtis Focht, Tanner, Levi and Andrew Evjene; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Bernie was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Ruby; infant brother, Hugh; brother, Ed Wales; sisters, Jean Larson, Anna Marie Cooper and husband Sidney Cooper. She will also be reunited after many years with her beloved husband, Pete; sons, Tom and Rod; and infant grand- daughter, Katie Rennfield.
Recitation of the rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Jewell Funeral Home, Deer Lodge. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Elliston School Gym. The graveside service will follow at the Elliston Cemetery, with a luncheon to follow in the Elliston School Gym.
