DUNLAP - Phyllis Clare Kimmen was born Aug. 2, 1934 at Earling to Lawrence and Hilda (Schumacher) Kimmen. She attended grade school at a country school near Earling and graduated from St. Paul's High School in Defiance in 1952. She then attended Commercial Extension College and was later employed by Farm Credit Services in Harlan and Mutual Benefit Insurance Company in Omaha, NE.

Nov. 15 1954, she married Richard C. Grote at St. Peter's Church in Defiance. After their marriage, they moved to a farm near Dunlap where she lived until the time of her death. During her married life, she was employed by Rogers Lumber Co., the Gold Slipper Steak House, the Crawford County ASCS, Home Town Pizza and she co-owned and operated the Corner Cafe. She was involved in many organizations including Catholic Daughters, Altar Society, St. Patrick's Finance Council, Crawford County Extension Council, Dunlap Booster Club and the Crawford County Democratic Committee. She was a life long member of the Catholic Church.

She died Feb. 3, 1992 at Marian Health Center in Sioux City after a lenghty struggle with cancer.

She was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors are her husband, Richard; one son, Dennis (Marilyn); two daughters, Diane Von Tersch (John) of Glenwood and Karla Assmann (Thomas) of Omaha, NE; four grandchildren; five brothers, Kenneth of Harlan; Raymond of Hastings, MN; Michael of Seward, NE; Alvin of Isabelle, MO; Larry of Dunlap; two sisters, Ramona (Gene) Case of Manning and Bonnie (Charles) Jacobs of Harlan; 31 nieces and nephews and other relatives.

Funeral services were held Feb. 6, 1992 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church at Dunlap with Rev. Fred Reischl, John Cain, Robert Audrey and Msgr. Robert Chamberlain officiating. Burial was in the Pleasant Hill Cemetey at Dunlap with Keith Culver, Bernard Assmann, Joe Sullivan and Frank Cogdill, casket bearers. Fouts Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
