While researching to determine whether Thomas's middle name was Hendry (after his mother's maiden name) or Hedding, which some people had it was discovered by C. A. Brooman that Hedding was the middle name.

Bishop Elijah Hedding of the Methodist-Episcopal Church was elected in 1824, and was said to be very influential in leading the church to large growth in the United States. Thomas's father was Rev. Thomas Nelson Barkdull of the Methodist-Espiscopal Church, so he surely held Hedding in high esteem, and gave his son the Hedding middle name.
