He was the son of Missouri's Gov. Hamilton Rowan Gamble & Caroline Coalter Gamble. Educated in the private schools of St. Louis, Lawrenceville, PA and Norristown, NJ ; graduated from St. Louis Medical College, 1869. He married Flora Matthews in St. Louis, Dec 22, 1864.
