Alexander was son of John and Mary (Anderson) Kelsay. He moved with parents to Greene County, Tennessee and then accompanied father to Wayne County, Kentucky where he married on February 20, 1816 to Jane "Jennie" Kelley, daughter of James and Margaret (Sloane) Kelley. They moved to Cooper County, Missouri (later to become Morgan County) and helped establish the Hopewell Union Church. Alec died there on July 23, 1842 and is buried beside his father and wife. His marker simply says A.J.D. Kelsay. Three of his eleven children were William (who remained in Missouri) and John and James who went west to Oregon.
