Enlisted as a Private on 23 December 1863 in 8th Light Artillery Regiment Wisconsin.
Mustered out on 10 August 1865 in Madison, WI.

Husband of Mary E. Daniels. Married July 3, 1853.

Stevens Point (Portage County, Wisconsin) Daily Journal; December 9, 1910, p. 1
Last Sunday E. M. Pickering, an early pioneer, passed peacefully away. The burden of years had pressed heavily upon him, having been sick a long time, and he had more than passed the three score years, and well lived, honest and industrious years they were. Over a half century ago he foresaw with prophetic eye the future develpment (sic) of Plainfield, where he chose to make his home and lived an honest, upright life. From his earliest settlement here to the sunset of his life he took an active interest in the development and progress of his town. He was born in South Gibson, Pa., Feb. 18, 1829. He married Mary E. Daniels, at Broooklyn (sic), Pa., July 3, 1853, and settled in Plainfield the same year. In 1863 he enlisted in the 8th Wisconsin Light artillery and took part in the battle of Stone River. Mr. and Mrs. Pickering held their golden wedding in Plainfield on July 3, 1903. He is survived by his wife and the following children: E. F. of California; C. S. of this village; Nettie, wife of Rev. Barnette, of Poynette, Wis.; Hattie, wife o f E. M. Funk, of Los Angeles, Cal., and Mrs. Jennie Nichols of California. Funeral services were held in this village Thursday, and after a long life well spent the pioneer has entered upon his rest and reward. He was spared to see the fulfillment of his prophecies of younger days--to witness the growth and building up of Plainfield from its earliest start.
