James Holman served as lieutenant in the US Army from 1857-61. With the coming of the Civil War he was appointed Lieutenant Colonel of the 1st Tennessee Infantry, CSA. He was not re-elected in the 1862 re-organization and was assigned to the command of a conscript camp in Knoxville, Tennessee in January 1863. He later was an aide to Gen. T. H. Taylor. After the war he bacame an attorney and prohibition leader in Fayetteville, Tennessee.

Note: had two wives, both named Elizabeth and went by LIZZIE. Lizzie Haynes Holman was listed on his will.
