Virginia Hayes Forrest passed away Wednesday January 28, 2015 at the Wellspring Retirement Community after a long period of declining health. She was born to Pearly Arthur Hayes and Virginia Townsend Hayes on December 11, 1919 in Greensboro NC. On June 16, 1921 a sister Anne Hayes was born. The family moved to Meadowbrook Terrace in Greensboro in June of 1928. Virginia graduated from Senior High School in Greensboro at 16 in 1936 and went to Mary Baldwin College in Staunton Virginia. She graduated in 1940 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Speech and English. She attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and graduated with a Master of Arts in Drama in 1942.

On July 4th 1942 she married Lt. Stephen Taylor Forrest and moved to Florida and Texas, where he served until the war was over. They moved back to Greensboro where Steve joined the Hayes' family business, Justice Drug Company, and later became president. Steve died from a brief illness in 1978.
Virginia was active in the Junior League, Children's Theatre, Greensboro Drug Auxiliary and the NC Pharmaceutical Auxiliary. She started the NC Pharmaceutical Loan Fund to honor her father, husband and family at the College of Pharmacy at UNC-CH. She loved First Presbyterian Church and was involved heavily in the church for many years. She held a variety of offices in leadership positions and served as a Deacon and an Elder.

She was a charter member of the Historical Book Club of NC and served as a board member. She was a life member of the Greensboro Preservation Guild and was the first president and organizer of the Belle Meade Society. She belonged to the Opera Guild, Daughters of the American Revolution, and served on the Greensboro Historical Museum Board as Vice President and President. Virginia was the consummate volunteer, anywhere she saw the need to improve something she did. She loved her church, her city and community. Mary Baldwin College honored her in 1999 with their Service to Community Award. She moved to Well Spring in 1993 and served on many committees and volunteered in the gift shop.

Virginia enjoyed travel with friends and family and was able to visit the Holy Lands, Europe, China, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and many other locations. She loved to dance, enjoyed the theatre and symphony. She loved people of all types, and she enjoyed a good joke. She had a positive attitude, was an extremely good sport on many levels, a good friend and a loving mother. She could work wonders with a needle and thread, a true Southern lady who conducted herself with charm and grace. Where she saw a need, she would jump in and help. She was generous in spirit, time, and donation. The Forrest Family Foundation was established by her in 1988 to pass to her children the joy of giving. The last few years she dealt with bad health but it did not dampen her spirit or strong faith. Virginia lived her life to the fullest and many people and places in Greensboro benefited from her positive influence.
Her sister Anne Brewer Davis passed on January 9, 2015. Virginia is survived by her children; Stephen Forrest and spouse Sandra F. Forrest, Hayes Forrest and spouse Betty Jo Wall Forrest, and Beverly Forrest Kehayes and spouse Ernie Kehayes.

Following her burial a celebration of her Life will take place at 11:00 AM Saturday, January 31, 2015 in the Well Spring Richardson Auditorium. The family will visit with friends in the Rotunda following the service.
