John R. “Jack” Sterner, age 84, Danville, died Monday, June 29, 2015.

Jack was born April 6, 1931, the son of Afwood W. and Margaret E. (Longenberger) Sterner. He was a 1949 graduate of Danville High School. He and the former Joyce Howery were married March 29, 1953, while Jack was stationed at Fort Knox, Ky. Jack was employed at Merck & Co. in Riverside. His employment was only interrupted after “Harry Truman drafted my ass,” as he so often quoted.

He is survived by his children: Valerie, Brian, and Kathy. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Jill Evert Abubo; Justin Evert; Blaine Sterner; Brenan Sterner; Erin Sidler; and Jamie Sidler, as well as a great-grandson, Nicholas Kessler; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Joyce; sister, Marjorie Stetler; brother, William “Bill” Sterner; and grandson, Darren A. Sterner.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
