Soldier in the War of 1812. He operated a farm in Nassau. Bateman served in Daniel St. John's Company of Artillery, Abraham J. Hardenbergh's Regiment, New York Detached Militia, enlisting in September 1813, and mustering out with the rest of his unit in Plattsburgh the following November. Usually referred to as Rensselaer Bateman, he was the son of Reuben Bateman, a founder of Nassau, New York and veteran of the Revolution. Stephen V.R. Bateman was also the son in law of Benjamin Greenman Jr., a farmer and veteran of the Revolution. He married Lydia Greenman of Stephentown on February 10, 1810. Stephen Van Rensselaer was the father of Horace Bateman, Sr. (1811-1892), and my great (times four) grandfather.
