Chicagoan 1 of 44 killed in crash
BARCELONA, Spain [AP] -- The bodies of 20 more American Sailors and Marines were pulled from the murky waters of Barcelona harbor Tuesday, raising the death toll to 44 from the capsizing of a U.S. Navy launch filled with servicemen returning from leave.
The Navy identified 27 of the dead Tuesday night and said the other names will be announced after notification of next of kin.
The list of dead included the names of Marine Lance Cpl. Steven Paul Mitchell of Chicago; Navy Seaman Dennis Allen Williamson of Balsom Lake, Wis.; and Navy Seaman Charles Baldwin of Beloit, Wis.
NO OTHER servicemen from the Chicago area were on the list.
Six men were missing and Navy officials said Spanish and U.S. Navy divers would continue to search. Because of the cold and darkness of the water, the search was suspended at sunset until Wednesday morning.
The 56-foot launch collided with a 380-ton Spanish freighter and overturned early Monday morning.
