Jack H. Horenberger, 87, of Bloomington, died at 4:45 a.m. Friday (Dec. 1, 2000) at his home. He had been ill.
Mr. Horenberger was born May 16, 1913, at Chicago, a son of John and Marie Wilkening Horenberger. He married Mary Ann Costello on May 31, 1941, at Bloomington. She survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Jane Ann Ehretsman, Cleveland, Ohio; and M. Jill Horenberger, Mays Landing, N.J.
Other survivors include five grandchildren, Jack Ehretsman, Steve Ehretsman, and Rosa, Roxanna, and Mary Lee Horenberger; one sister-in-law; two nephews; and five nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
Mr. Horenberger was a 1936 graduate of Illinois Wesleyan University and received his master's degree from the University of Illinois.
He served in the U.S. Navy from September 1943 until January 1946 in World War II.
He retired in 1981 as Athletic Director at IWU after 35 years in that position.
Mr. Horenberger was a captain of Wesleyan's only undefeated basketball team in 1936. He later coached two men at Wesleyan who became major league managers, Bobby Winkles and Doug Rader. The new baseball field at IWU was named in his honor in 1999.
Mr. Horenberger was the recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award at IWU and the Distinguished Fiji Award from Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. He was the founder and former commissioner of the Central Illinois Collegiate League for baseball. He is a former member of the National Association from Intercollegiate Athletes Hall of Fame as a basketball coach and also is a member of the Illinois Basketball and Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame. Mr. Horenberger was a member of IWU's President's Club, Lakeside Country Club, and he was a past president of the Bloomington Kiwanis.
