Born to Moses Samuel Wilhoit Sparks (1812-1883) & Elizabeth Ann Yeager Sparks (1820-1885), who married in 1838.

Jim was named for President James Buchanan, who was the Democratic nominee for president when Jim was born. President Buchanan was in office 1857-1861.

James married Octavia Cansler on Feb. 18, 1879, in Smith County, TX.

Three children:
• Walter William Sparks (1882–1970)
• Samuel Cleveland "Sam" Sparks (1884–1963)
• Charley Henry Sparks (1886–1929)

James Sparks' death date/place were gleaned from "Alabama Deaths: 1908-59" on ancestry.com. Although the cemetery is not specified, I have placed him here with his sister-in-law, Isabelle Cansler Scarlett, and brother-in-law, Charles Lee Cansler. Since James was living in New Mexico in 1910, he must have been visiting family in Alabama when he died.
