Jay Wellman is Dead at Masonville
Resided in Vicinity of Masonville for Nearly Fifty Years, Funeral Held Thursday.

Jay Wellman, for nearly 50 years a resident of the Masonville vicinity, died at his home June 6, 1939, after a brief illness. Funeral services were held in the family home Thursday afternoon in charge of the Rev. A. R. Coover, pastor of the Methodist church. Interment was made in the Masonville cemetery.

A son of Alonzo and Catherine Wellman, he was born in Kenosha, Wis., Feb. 21, 1851. In 1865 the family came west and located near Masonville, where the father owned and operated a hotel. In early life the son clerked in stores at Masonville and Manchester and was employed here in the Max Beehler clothing store, then located in the building so long occupied by W. H. Lafferty's grocery store.

Mr. Wellman was married to Miss Florence Eastman in 1869 and for several years they famed near Masonville. In 1880 they moved to Mitchell, S. D., where Mr. Wellman engaged in the grocery business. In 1889 Mrs. Wellman passed away and in 1891 Mr. Wellman married Miss Carrie Eastman a sister of the first Mrs. Wellman, and in 1900 moved to a farm south of Masonville where his death occurred.

Mr. Wellman was the last of his family, his parents and brothers, Guy and Scott, having preceded him in death. In early life he united with the Congregational church, but finding no church of that denomination in his home community, he affiliated with the Methodist church. In early life he was also active in the order of Knights of Pythias at Chamberlain, S. D.

He was a man of companionable nature and had a host of friends who will miss him. His widow has the sympathy of many friends in her sorrow.
