Sarah Jane Conner, the first wife of Abyram Leonard and mother of Sarah Jane Leonard. She died just 2 1/2 weeks after giving birth to her only child. That means she died the year before the biographical sketch states that Sarah and A. L. came to Iowa. Perhaps the date in the book is wrong. According to a story told to me by Naomi Ruth Maxwell Sonner(her great granddaughter ), Sarah Jane Conner died as the family traveled from Ohio to Iowa, dying just east of the Mississippi River. Using the death date to calculate, Sarah would have been born either Dec. 31, 1832 or Jan. 1, 1833. Her baby daughter was raised by her mother's parents, the Conners.
