Rosa Mae Jones Pierce Byrum, 95, of the 2200 block of Virginia Road, died Monday, June 29, 2015 in Vidant Chowan Hospital, Edenton. Mrs. Byrum was born in Gates County on December 22, 1919, and was the daughter of the late Riddick and Ina Smith Jones. A homemaker, she was a member of Rocky Hock Baptist Church, its Young At Heart Bible Study Group, had been a member of the former Edenton Chapter #302, The Order of the Eastern Star, and had worked as a volunteer at Chowan Hospital. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Herman DeWitt Pierce, Sr., by her second husband, H. Fahey Byrum, Sr., by her daughter, Sharon Pierce Hendricks; by sisters, Golden, Purcell, and Helen; by brothers, Clyde, Willard, Mearl, Clifton, Edward, Frank, Vernon, and Carl; by a grandson, Scott McClenny Pierce; and by a step son-in-law, Zackie Harrell. Surviving are her son, H. DeWitt Pierce, Jr. and wife Peggy of Hobbsville, and her son-in-law, Julian Hendricks of Cary. Also surviving are two step-daughters, Kathryn Faye Harrell of Gatesville and Julia Nixon and husband James of Tyner; a step-son, H. Fahey Butch Byrum, Jr. and wife Emily of Edenton; two sisters, Mary Ann Parker of Edenton and Lillian Kitty Greene of Eure; three granddaughters, Rosa, Julie, and Karen; eight step-grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Graveside services will be held Thursday at 11:00 a.m. in the Pierce Family Cemetery, 196 Catherines Creek Road, Hobbsville, by Dr. James Horton and the Rev. Gene Asbill. Friends may join the family Wednesday from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, and all other times at the residence. Flowers are welcomed, or contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society , 930 Wellness Drive B, Greenville, NC 27834.
