Bernie Berry
Bernard Jackson "Bernie" Berry, 100, died on May 30, 2015, in Longview, Washington. He was born March 3, 1915, in Embden, Maine, to Michael & Flora Belle (Jackson) Berry. His mother died when he was four and his father died when he was ten. He and his brother Stanley went to live at the Goodwill-Hinckley Children's Home where he stayed until he was graduated from high school when he was sixteen. He attended business school in Springfield, Massachusetts. On July 6, 1940, he married Genevieve "Jerry" Berry. The couple moved to Denver and then to Ajo. He called the community home for 65 years. Mr. Berry worked first for Phelps Dodge and then became the bookkeeper for Ajo Improvement — a job he retired from in 1983 after 37 years. He also helped man the local ambulance with funeral home director Joe McCarthy from 1946 to 1959. He was elected to serve on first-seated Western Pima County Community Council and served as its informal historian. Mr. Berry was active in the Ajo Federated Church, Masonic Lodge, Boy Scouts, and many other community organizations. He would often say, "Weren't we lucky to live in Ajo!" Many people in the community felt they were the lucky ones to have him.
In 2009 he moved to Washington to be near his son Steve. He once wrote to the Ajo Copper News, "I take my pencil in hand and send greetings to you all! ... If I find my pen, I'll keep it in hand!, which was typical of his puckish sense of humor. He often penned historical notes and poetry. His Hasta La Vista, a tribute to Marceline Marietti, was one of two poems published in Reflections of Life from EPS Publishing. He recently celebrated his 100th birthday with family and friends and was recognized on the NBC Today Show with a photo of him playing his harmonica.
He is remembered by his family as loving, caring, and with a wonderful sense of humor. After the death of his wife Jerry, he married Hellen Frances Roberts, widow of Loyed Roberts, and the daughter of Mrs. Virgil Lee Greathouse. After Hellen's death in 1999, Bernie later married the widow Audrey Lee Johnson Dominguez (1928~2007) who also preceded him in death. Mr. Berry is survived by his sons & daughters-in-law, Michael & Marjatta Berry of Finland, Wes & Ermie Berry of Page, and Steve & Joyce Berry of Rainier, Oregon; by his nine grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren; and by many nieces and nephews. He will be buried in Ajo in the fall.
