Edgar William Smith, sixth child of Daniel Thornton Smith and Aletha Frances Jones, was born on April 22, 1871 at Bedford, Adams County, Iowa. He married Ellen Mastin (1874-1959) daughter of Hiram Thomas Mastin and Margaret Lane, on July 1, 1891 at Denver, Arapahoe County, Colorado. From 1891 to 1910 he farmed in Gove County. Sometime before 1916 he purchased The Salina Alfalfa Meal Co. in Salina, Saline County, Kansas. In March of 1916 Edgar had been ill with tuberculosis and in early April he went for treatment to a spa in Excelsior Springs, Clay Co., Missouri. He was there for about a month when he died on May 6, 1916. Ella went to Missouri and brought his body back to Salina, where he is buried in Block 15 Lot 07 Space 16. A large marble marker is there with Edgar W. and Ella Smith on it, and room for their children, but only he is buried there. He was 45 years old when he died.
