Lt. Andrew J. Broaddus
born 12/11/1840 in Georgetown, KY

Company C, 39th Battalion Virginia Cavalry, General HeadQuarters, Army of Northern Virginia, C.S.A.

Residence was not listed; 22 years old; 5' 11", fair complexion, blue eyes, light hair.
Enlisted on 12/20/1862 at Luray, VA., he was mustered into "C" Co. VA 39th Battn Cavalry as a Private.
Elected 3rd Lieut 3/9/1863.
Horse killed 9/15/1863; compensated $200.00.
Courtmartialed 12/7/1863 for conduct unbecoming an officer.
AWOL 12/17/1864 - 12/31/1864.
He was Surrendered on 4/9/1865 at Appomattox Court House, VA.

The 39th Cavalry Battalion [also called Richardson's Battalion of Scouts, Guides, and Couriers] was organized with two companies, later increased to four. It was attached to General Headquarters, Army of Northern Virginia, and served as General R.E. Lee's personal cavalry command. The unit participated in every engagement at which General Lee was present from Fredericksburg to Appomattox.

Andrew J. Broaddus, 3rd Lt., Co. C, 39th Battalion Va. Cav. (11 Dec 1840 – 13 Jun 1898) s/o Andrew & Belle Sims (OR Isabella Furnace Lionberger d/o David & Mary Brubaker Lionberger) Broaddus. Married (5 Sep 1865, Page) Elizabeth "Bettie" Clarinda Lionberger (2 Oct 1839 – 19 Feb 1899), d/o John and Lavinia C. Seibert Lionberger.

On 17 January 2011, Marlin Diehl provided the following information;

Mr. Andrew J. Broaddus, aged about 60 years, died suddenly, at his home in Luray, Va., Monday night. June 13, 1898, of an attack of paralysis of the heart. He has been unwell for some time, but has been attending to business.

Mr. Broaddus has been prominent in the affairs of Page county, and during the days of Re- adjustment represented the county in the Virginia Legislature. He has held a number of places of honor and public trust, and at the time of his death was Clerk of the County and Circuit Courts, and was editor of the Page Courier. He took much interest In church work, and was a prominent member of the Baptist church at the time of his death
