Mitchell Gideon Duhon, 85, of Lake Charles died Tuesday, April 28, 2009 in his residence. Mr. Duhon was a life long resident of Lake Charles and a member of a pioneer Lake Charles family. His descendants, Cyprien Duhon, Elise Granger, and John Jacob Ryan were early residents of South Lake Charles. Mr. Duhon was a 1942 graduate of LaGrange High School ,attended McNeese Jr. college where he was a member of the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) when he joined the United States Navy and was inducted into the United States Navy Reserve pre- midshipman school (V-12 Program) at Southwestern Louisiana Institute (SLI) in Lafayette. He also attended the United States Navy Reserve Midshipman School at Northwestern University in Chicago, IL. Upon completion he studied at the United States Navy Reserve School of communications at Harvard University in Boston. Ultimately he was assigned to the Underwater Demolition School at Fort Pierce, FL where he trained to be a frog-man and was assigned to the underwater demolition team. His team did the occupational reconnaissance duty in Japan during WWII. At time of his discharge he was attached to L.S.M. Squadron #7 staff command. He attended Loyola University of the South School of Pharmacy in New Orleans and began his pharmaceutical career at Gordon's Drug Store in Lake Charles and Cades Pharmacy in Sulphur. He later opened his own pharmacy, Enterprise Pharmacy, on the corner of 12th Street and Enterprise Boulevard. He was a member of the Louisiana State Pharmaceutical Association, Msgr. Irving DeBlanc Knights of Columbus Council #4562, and Msgr. Cramer's Assembly 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. He is survived by nephews Mitchell David Duhon, Paul Duhon, Theos Duhon Jr. and Ronnie Duhon, nieces Sandra Duhon Bernard of DeQuincy, Johnnette Duhon of Springfield, Ohio and Judith Ray Williams of Mobile, Alabama. Mr. Duhon was preceded in death by his parents Mitchell (Ged) Duhon of Prien Lake area and Mary Yolen Duhon of Hackberry, eight brothers: Benoit Theos, J.V., Shannon, Shannelle, Delos, Almon, and Glaude Duhon, one sister Ophelia Duhon. His funeral will be held on Friday, May 1, 2009 at 1:00 PM from Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church. Rev. Nathan Long will officiate. Burial will be in Burleson-Duhon Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. Visitation will begin on Thursday at 3:00 PM until 9:00 PM with a scripture service at 6:00 PM followed by a rosary at 6:30 PM. Visitation will continue on Friday at 8:00 AM until 12:30PM in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers the family has requested that donations be made to the St. Martin de Porres building fund 5326 Elliot Rd. Lake Charles, Louisiana 70605 or to the Our Lady Queen of Heaven School Guardian Angel Fund 3908 Creole St. Lake Charles, LA 70605.
