Karp Leonard Stockton was born on February 26, 1888, son of James Carey and Catherine Elizabeth Stockton. He graduated from Monticello High School in 1908, then went on to Perdue University from which he graduated in 1912. During his attendance, he became one of the greatest athletes the school has seen, becoming the captain of the basketball team in 1911, and track team in 1912. He also became the Class president in 1912, was president of the Student Body Athletic Association from 1911-1912, and even president of the Student Council.

On June 18, 1913 he married Juniata Kingsbury, daughter of Loyd Leslie, and Mary Ellen Kingsbury. First they lived in Whiting, Indiana, where he coached at the high school. Then he and Juniata moved to Ralls, Texas where he became superintendent of a ranch from 1915-1918. He also became secretary to the local Chamber of Congress. Then afterwards moved to San Bernardino, CA where from 1919-1920 he was a coach and a commandant of the cadets at the high school. Also he became the vice principal, then became the principal from 1920 onward.

From 1922-1923 he was president of the Lions club, and also the Principals Club of the San Bernardino Valley. He also was a delegate to the International Convention in Atlantic City, NJ.
