Sydney Hall Obituary
Hall, Sydney Frances Houston Born July 16, 1936 in Memphis, Tennessee, she passed away peacefully at home, with her husband and children at her side, on Sunday, October 17, 2010. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frances Martin Houston and George McKnight Houston of Memphis, Tennessee; her maternal grandparents, Cleopatra King Martin and Benjamin Franklin Martin of Greenville, South Carolina; and her paternal grandparents, Elizabeth Minor McLemore Houston and Judge William Cannon Houston of Woodbury, Tennessee. She was a radiant Southern Belle with a zest for life, a passion for art, and a deep love of her family and friends. After her graduation from Miss Hutchinson's School in Memphis, she attended Vanderbilt University, where she was a member of the Kappa Delta sorority. She enjoyed Memphis society, and once presided over the Memphis Cotton Carnival as The Queen of Rå-Met. At the age of 20, her artistic ambitions drew her away from Tennessee to New York City, where she attended the Parson's School of Design. Shortly after her arrival in the Big City, she was swept off her feet by Wallace Legette Hall of Little Rock, Arkansas, who was in training as a stockbroker with Francis I. DuPont. They married July 27, 1957 in Memphis and moved to Dallas to live, a decision she never regretted, as Dallas treated them both very well throughout their 53 years together. She enthusiastically served numerous Dallas philanthropies in leadership capacities, including United Cerebral Palsy, Dallas Museum of Arts, St. Michael's School, and St. Mark's School of Texas. She was also an active member of Dallas Junior League, Dallas Woman's Club, Dallas Garden Club, Founders Garden Club, Sweetheart Ball Committee, Ridotto Dance Club, Electra Investment Club, and Topics and Trends. She was a long-time member of St. Michael's and All Angels Episcopal Church. She was fortunate to have many wonderful friends and she loved them dearly. Among her many goings-on, she especially enjoyed her Monday bridge club, her Tuesday painting group, her lunch groups, her study groups, and the Crafty Ladies. She also loved the European hiking trips she and her husband took with friends. But her greatest joy was her family. She treasured family time together during trips to Italy, Scotland and Spain with her children and grandchildren (planned by her husband, an avid and adventurous traveler), as well as the summer vacations in Colorado. Holiday gatherings were also a special time for family celebration, including her famous Easter egg hunts. She loved sharing her passion for art and art history with her children and grandchildren, and she was an ever-present fan on the sidelines of their sporting events. She was a gifted artist with a wonderful imagination and a creative style and talent that effused whimsy and happiness throughout her home and her life. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who loved her family without reservation and gave of herself without hesitation. Never one to complain or speak harshly of others, she will be most remembered for her warm and beautiful smile, her deep compassion for others, her strong character, and the incredible grace by which she lived her life. She will be desperately missed by all of us. She is survived by her husband, Wallace Legette Hall; her daughter, Sydney Ann Hall; her sons, George Houston Hall, his wife Michelle, and Wallace Legette Hall, Jr., and his wife Kristi. She was blessed with 10 adored and adoring grandchildren, Jakesy Jordaan, Sydney Jordaan, Gabriella Hall, Francesca Hall, Haley Hall, Madeleine Hall, William Hall, Kellam Hall, Avery Hall and Wallace Hall III (Getty). She is also survived by her sister, Harriet Houston Hough and her husband, Royce; and her nephews, Mark Hough, Ben Hough, Michael Hough, and their families. A memorial service will be held at 4 pm Thursday, October 21st at the St. Michael's and All Angels Episcopal Church, 8011 Douglas Avenue in Dallas. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in her name to the Children's Medical Center, Center for Cancer & Blood Disorders (CCBD), at 2777 Stemmons Freeway Suite 700, Dallas, TX 75207.
