Elwood completed his WWI Draft Registration Card in June of 1917 and was selected to join the Army the following year. He was inducted into service on April 25, 1918 and assigned to Company F, 316th Ammunition Train, in the 91st Division. Elwood was sent to Camp Lewis in Washington for three months of training before shipping overseas in June. His questionnaire, which is unsigned, doesn't give any more details about his time overseas.
Further research tells us that Elwood was discharged from the Army on May 5, 1919 and returned to Utah. According to the 1920 census, Elwood rejoined his family in Willard and worked as a laborer in the oil field. He then traveled to California where he resided in San Francisco and Stockton before settling in Helena, Montana. Elwood completed a WWII Draft Registration card in 1942, which reports that he was unemployed and living at the Morton Hotel in Portland. At the age of 58, Elwood was admitted to the Veterans' Administration Hospital at Fort Harrison and died on April 17, 1953 from acute hepatitis. According to his death certificate, Elwood never married and was working at the railroad maintenance department in Butte prior to his illness. His body was returned to Utah and is buried at the Willard Precinct Cemetery.
