William Gaither Aydlett, age 93, of Elizabeth City, NC passed away on Friday, December 20, 2013 at Winslow Memorial Home. Born in Harbinger, NC on February 16, 1920, to the late Nathanial T. Aydlett and Lydia Duncan Aydlett, Gaither was the widower of Kathryn Love Aydlett. He was the former owner/operator of Albemarle Welding and Machine Shop. Mr. Aydlett served in the United States Marine Corps as a radio courier on the island of Okinawa during World War II. He was a member of the First Baptist Church serving as an honorary lifetime Deacon, a former Sunday School Teacher, Youth Choir Director and Adult Choir Director for over 30 years. He also organized a group of singers from the First Baptist Church, known as “The Fish Brothers” who sang at various clubs, churches, socials or wherever and whenever they were invited. Gaither, or “Great Gait” as his grandchildren/great-grandchildren often called him, had a very ‘Deep Passion’ for music.

Gaither, after returning from the war, worked for his Dad at the Aydlett Products Company, keeping the machinery in operation for the making of potato chips, cinnamon squares, peanut brittle, Christmas candies, peanut butter, peanut bars, peanut butter cheese squares, roasted and salted peanuts, Malt-O-Milk Sandwiches and Butter Crisp Sandwiches which were sold to all the neighboring grocery stores.

Gaither also was in the Boy Scouts, the Elizabeth City Drum and Bugle Corps, the I. O. of Red Men, Lion’s Club, Kiwanis Glee Club, member of the N. C. State Guard, Bookkeeper and Teller at First and Citizens National Bank and past President of the Elizabeth City Bands Club.

He is survived by four sons, D. Mike Aydlett and wife Joyce of Camden, NC, their children, David Aydlett and wife Sissy, sons Ben and Alex, John Aydlett and wife Amie, their daughter Kate Love, Bryan Aydlett and wife Ashley, their son Chase; Tim Aydlett and wife Michele of Elizabeth City, NC, their children, Chris Aydlett and wife Debby, Charles Aydlett and financée Marissa Hayes; Mark Aydlett and wife Joyce of Bath, NC, their daughter Katye A Whalen and husband Ken, daughters Gracie and Riley; Milton Aydlett and wife Denise of Elizabeth City, NC, their daughter Kathy Jo Aydlett and his fourteen year old feline friend “ANDY”.

Visitation will be held Thursday, January 2, 2013 between 7:00 and 8:30 at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street
