Townshend Dade and his brothers James and George Fitzhugh Vass were CSA soldiers in the famous Black Horse Troop, Company H 4th Virginia Cavalry from Warrenton. Townshend was "killed in action" - shot in right side on May 26, 1864 at Kennon's Farm in Charles City County, Va. at the age of 17. Military records list him as T.D. and T.E.D. Vass ["TED" may have been a nickname.] He was buried in a grave on top of his brother George Fitzhugh Vass in graves marked 84 and 84 1/2. They were the sons of Siffrein and Susan Fitzhugh Vass of Culpeper, Va.
