Wade Roger Marcrum, age 91, departed this life on Wednesday, June 17, 2015. Wade was born one of ten children to Robert F. Marcrum and Ivy Pearl Wiley Marcrum in Gonzales, Texas on August 4, 1923. While Wade was still in grade school, his family moved to Austin, Texas, where he spent most of his adult life.

Wade served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II, both in the Atlantic and Pacific aboard three different ships, before being discharged honorably and returning to Austin. On August 7, 1942, he married Agnes Bernice Nordvall. Wade and Bernice had three daughters; Janet, Gloria, and Lydia. Wade and Bernice had been married for 57 years at the time of her death in 1999. Wade and wife Bernice retired in 1986 and moved to Elgin, Texas where they both resided until the time of their deaths. He was a General Manager of INSCO Distributing, a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, a member of Masonic Lodge #12 of Austin, and a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church of Elgin, Texas.

Wade loved fishing, hunting, bowling, and was an avid Texas Rangers fan. He was a team league and tournament bowler for over 20 years and traveled to many tournaments around the state. He rarely missed a deer or dove hunting season in his younger days. Fishing was the joy of his life; he would wake at 4:00 AM to head out and spent numerous hours quietly fishing. It was a rare day for him to return home without catching at least 30 bass. He shared his joy of fishing with his grandson, Patrick, and his brothers, Bob and Luther. His collection of fishing rods were some of his greatest possessions. Wade was an avid football fan and enjoyed college football above all else. He was a diehard Texas Longhorn fan. It was not unusual to find him watching one football game on T.V. while listening to another game on the radio. And, when football and baseball seasons overlapped, well that meant he had to have the radio and both the televisions tuned to different games. Even in his nineties, his memory of sports facts and trivia was amazing. He never missed a World Series in over 50 years and no one dared get between him and the television while the game was on! After his move to Elgin in his retirement, he and Bernice enjoyed travelling around the State. For many years, he was an active member of the Elgin VFW Post #6115, where he served as bartender and enjoyed playing dominoes with his buddies.

There was only one thing more dear to his heart than sports or fishing – his beloved his family. He was always there for his girls and took great pride in his daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He tenderly referred to his two daughters, Gloria and Lydia as the “Bosses.” In Wade’s last years, his girls took care of him and were always by his side to help him in whatever way he needed them. Wade spent his final days at home with his daughters.
Wade was preceded in death by both his parents, Frank and Ivy Pearl; his wife, Bernice; his daughter, Janet Griffith Garza; his brother, Bill Marcrum; and sisters, Ruth Hemby, Beatrice McMullin, Dorothy West, and Gloria Bryant.
