Joseph was a metallurgist employed by Lyon and Conklyn. He invented the first lighting machine but did not have it patented. A friend, who was also working on one, examined Joseph, corrected his own model and had his model patented. The story of the stolen invention was written up in the Baltimore Sunpapers.
