Arthur James (A. J.) Ankney Sr., of Eastham, Albemarle Co. died Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2005. He was born Aug. 23, 1914, in Derry, Pa., a son of the late Anna Belle Leary and Lemon Orange Ankney. He was also a step-son of the late Sarah Elizabeth Wedge Ankney, his mother having died when he was age four.

He was also preceded in death by siblings, Norman, Robert, Sarah (Sis), Albert Eugene (Dean), Kenneth (Bill), John, Viola, Charles (Kye).

He was a heavy truck operator for Saxton Coke and Coal Co. and a member of the PA National Guard 28th Div., Heavy Weapons Co. M of Latrobe, PA before being inducted into Federal Service in 1940, entering Radio School in Div. Hdqtrs. He was a Radio Instructor in Ft. Benning, Ga., also an instructor in Wales from 1943 until a few weeks before the Invasion.

He was responsible for communication with Eisenhower and Corp Hdqtrs 1st Army. He was wounded in the leg by shrapnel on the Siegfreid Line. He lost his vehicle and radio at the Battle of Bastone. After escaping back to Hdqtrs, he was discharged from 424 Signal Corps.

He received 11 medals, including the Bronze and Silver Star. He worked in both highway and housing construction, owned and operated A.J. Ankney Bldg Co., and retired as supervisor. from the RSPD at The University of Virginia in 1979 with 10 years of service.

He operated a cabinet shop after retirement.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Virginia Sites Ankney, whom he married Nov. 24, 1942. Surviving are two daughters, Helen Anne Stevens and her husband, Linwood, Candace Lee Pugh and Edgar F. Pugh Jr.; a son, Arthur James Ankney Jr., all of Charlottesville, Va.; four granddaughters, Kimberly Haney, Terry Voight and her husband, John, Wendy Pugh and Kimbral Dumler and her husband Mark; four grandsons, Arthur James Ankney, III and John Astor Ankney, Matthew Scott Small and Todd Tritt. He has five great-granddaughters, Michelle and Jennifer Weeks, Olivia Ankney, Tanner Pugh and Emily Voight; five great-grandsons, Alexander Ankney, Michael Tritt, John Haney, Ethan Small and Peter Voight. He is also survived by siblings, Grace Johnson, Betty Guiher, Helen Mascilak, Hazel Byers, Ma1colm (Mike), Edward, Duane (Jim) and Ronald, all of Pennsylvania.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today, at at Hill & Wood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Katha Bollfrass officiating. Interment will follow at Rock Springs Methodist Church Cemetery.
