Sergeant Edward L. Atherton, DSN 7609, was originally hired as a police cadet on January 19, 1970. In this capacity, he held various assignments within the department until his appointment to the police academy. They were the Communication Division, Tactical Deployment Unit, Meter's Patrol, District 7, and the Police Academy. On May 4, 1972, Sergeant Atherton received his commission and entered the Greater Saint Louis Police Academy. After completion of the academy, his first uniformed assignment was the 1st District, followed by the Mobile Reserve Section, the 7th and 5th Districts, the Bureau of Field Operations, the 4th and 9th Districts, the Bureau of Investigation, and the Traffic Safety Division. While he was in the traffic safety division, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. On March 2, 1989, he was transferred from the Traffic Safety Division to the 9th District on March 6, 1989, as a Line Platoon Supervisor. Sergeant Atherton served the rest of his career in the 9th District. Sergeant Atherton retired from the Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Department on October 1, 1993. Sergeant Atherton served 20.72 years of faithful and dedicated service to the department.

Beloved husband for 44 years of Deborah Atherton (nee Kallbrier). Loving son-in-law of Mary Ann Kallbrier (nee Uhlmansiek). Devoted father of Steven Ed (Tai) Atherton and Phillip Ed Atherton and Lisa (Jackson) Kendall. Cherished grandfather of Tyler, Brooklyn, Steven Jr., Luke, and Jack. Dear brother of Linda (Jeff) Wood. Brother-in-law of Loraine LaMora, Peggy (Richard) Newnham, Edward (Rebecca) Kallbrier and Delores (John) Campbell. Dear nephew of Rose Finazzo (nee Bommarito). Our dearest "Godfather", Uncle, Great Uncle, Cousin and Friend of many.
