Helen “Maxine” Garrison Bean passed away on Wednesday, June 10, 2015, in Clarksville, Arkansas.

She was born January 31, 1927, in Pratt, Kansas, to Harry and Helen Garrison.

Maxine was the middle child of three daughters; she grew up in Pratt, Kansas; and she graduated from Pratt High School. Maxine and her family spent many Sunday afternoons in Pratt during World War II, serving Sunday dinners in their home to military soldiers, from the local base.

Following her graduation from high school, Maxine moved to Clarksville, Arkansas, to attend the College of the Ozarks, known for its music programs. Upon moving to Clarksville, Maxine rented a room from Olsetta Bean, her future mother-in-law. She met her future husband, Garland Bean, through Olsetta, while attending college, in 1948.

Maxine graduated from the College of the Ozarks, with a degree in music, and shortly after that, married Garland Bean, in 1949. They continued to live in Clarksville until 1951, when they moved to Wichita, Kansas for Garland’s employment. They raised four children, Bob, Mike, Gary, and Beverly.

Maxine worked at Wesley Medical Center, in Wichita, as an orthopedic technician for 18 years. She later retired, in 1988, along with Garland, and they set their sights on Clarksville, to spend their retirement years. They moved into their retirement home, which they built in 1960, in Clarksville, and they enjoyed many years together in this small, community with a multitude of extended family.

Maxine’s husband, Garland, passed away on December 9, 2014.

Maxine worked hard all her life, and accomplished much; always put others first; and in later years, she delighted in seeing her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who came to visit her. Maxine was a very positive person, and well-respected in her community. She accepted all those she met, immediately making them feel like family. Maxine managed many family gatherings, and often entertained the entire family, cooking and caring for each member of her family.

Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, and her two sisters, Cleo Garrison, of Emporia, Kansas, and Doris Igims, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Maxine is survived by her three sons, Bob (Marilyn) Bean, of Lawrence, Kansas; Mike Bean, of Clarksville; Gary Bean, of Wichita, Kansas; and her daughter, Beverly (Roger) Hume, of Derby, Kansas.
Maxine leaves behind four grandchildren, David (Cheryl) Bean, of Topeka, Kansas; Jennifer Bean, of Lawrence, Kansas; Lindsey (Jeff) Huhman, of Derby, Kansas; and Hayley Hume, of Derby, Kansas. Maxine will also be missed by her three great-grandchildren, Ashley Bean, Austin Bean, and Caitlyn Bean, of Topeka, Kansas, all of whom kept in close contact with her.

A visitation for Maxine will be held on Sunday, June 14, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., at Roller-Cox Funeral Home, Clarksville, Arkansas.

A Funeral service for Maxine will be held at the Stillwell Bible Baptist Church, in Clarksville, Arkansas, with Pastor Jim Goodman officiating, on Monday, June 15, 2015, at 10:00 a.m., and her burial will be beside her husband, Garland, at Mount Airy Cemetery, in Ludwig, Arkansas.

A memorial has been established at the Stillwell Bible Baptist Church, 117 County Road 3452, Clarksville, Arkansas 72830, to honor Maxine.
