Jacob F. Balzer, 97, of Hillsboro, KS, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000 at the Hillsboro Community Medical Center.

Born Sept. 24, 1902 on a farm four miles east of Inman, KS to Henry and Elizabeth (Voth) Balzer, he moved with his parents in 1906 to Hooker where they settled on a farm five miles south of Hooker.

He attended the Fairview District Country School near Hooker and also attended the German Bible School and Tabor College Academy where he graduated in 1926.

Baptized June 17, 1917 at the Hooker Mennonite Brethren Church, later becoming the Adams Mennonite Brethren Church, he remained a faithful member for nearly 83 years.

He served as a Sunday school teacher, the church secretary, a correspondent for the Zoinsbote publication and a Mennonite Hilfs-Plan representative. He also farmed and enjoyed carpentry and gardening.

He married Olga Friesen Aug. 26, 1928 and they established their home eight miles south of Hooker. To them were born six children although their first child, Donald Dean, died a few hours after birth.

The couple moved their family to her home place near Adams in 1954. She preceded him in death Jan. 26, 1964.

July 17, 1965, he married Lydia Plett. After his retirement in 1971, they served two years under the Mennonite Brethren Missions and Services at the Home for the Aged in Corn before returning to Adams.

In the fall of 1993, they moved to the Hillsboro Salem Hospital Apartments in Hillsboro, KS.

Survivors include his wife, Lydia of Hillsboro; and children, Joelle and Josephine Balzer of Prairieville, LA, Elnadine Balzer of Larned, KS, Ronald and Hijuana Balzer of Broken Arrow, Howard Balzer of Buhler and Ted and Janet Balzer of McPherson, KS. Plus grandchildren and great grandchildren, Brent and Amy Balzer, Sterling and Noelle and Charles and Carletta Morgan, Kaeli and Chaz of Prairieville, LA; Jerry and Tamara Hinerman, Micaela, Kianna and Jonathan of Hillsboro, KS; Wade and Kathleen Balzer, Joshua, Grace, Loretta and Ruth Anna of Broken Arrow; John and Roseann Francis, Samantha, Marissa and Allison of Hutchinson, KS; and Dori Balzer of Buhler, KS.

Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 21 at 2 p.m. at the Adams Mennonite Brethren Church in Adams with the Rev. Tim Sullivan and the Rev. Frank Huebert officiating.
