RHINARD AND BARBARA KIRSCHBAUM
Rhinard Kirschbaum was born at Cassville, Wisconsin in 1858. Barbara Schleier was also born at Cassville, July 3, 1861. Their parents had migrated from Germany to homestead in Wisconsin, Rhinard and Barbara were married August 15, 1880 and came west to Iowa in a covered wagon. They traveled three weeks and settled on a homestead near Westphalia, Iowa. After a few years they acquired land near Defiance and that became their lifetime home, They reared seven children: William (February 4, 1882) married Loa Shannon in 1906 and farmed all his life and raised purebred Angus cattle. They had three daughters, Mildred, Adeline and Helen, William died April 1, 1954 and Loa died May 20, 1973.
Gertrude (October 23, 1883) never married but stayed with members of her family. She died February 28, 1974. Anna (June 12, 1886) married Dr. F,E, Peters. They lived at Arcadia and later at Defiance, He died December 6, 1942. They had four children, Xystus, Leroy, Edward and Barbara, Anna died in Council Bluffs November 22, 1966. John (September 18, 1888) married Frances Rosmann in 1914, They lived on a farm and had eight children, lone, Leone, Marjorie, Jack, Mary Ann, Bob, Charles, and Don, Frances died in 1939 and John died at Harlan October, 1980, at age 92. Michael (January 15, 1894) became a pharmacist and had a large furniture and appliance store in Sioux City. He married Morrow Coates of Sioux City, who died in December, 1963;
Michael died in December, 1966. Katie (November 28, 1895) married Henry Martens and her family history is written separately in this book, Mayme (March 20, 1899) was single and died September 23, 1932, Rhinard died in October, 1937, and Barbara died February 14, 1940. They are buried at the Catholic Cemetery in Defiance. They were members of St, Peter's Church from its very beginning,
