Zachariah Taylor “Creed” Atkins –
born on Sep 12, 1848 in Franklin Co., Virginia. He died on Sep 12, 1948 in Franklin Co., Virginia.

Zachariah married on Sep 26, 1871 in Franklin Co, VA with Emerline Francis Lockard; the daughter of:

David M. Lockard; born 1830 Bedford, VA - May 16, 1867 Franklin Co, VA and
Mary Frances Mays born May 8, 1838 Franklin Co, VA - Sep 7, 1925 Franklin Co, VA.
David and Mary were married Aug 26, 1853 in VA.

Emerline Francis Lockard was born on Mar 8, 1851 in Franklin Co, Virginia and died on Sep 7, 1926 in Charlottesville, Albemarle, Virginia; in the University of Virginia Hospital.

Zachariah and Emerline were the parents of –
Mary Alice 1873 – 1930, Salona 'Lonie' Elizabeth 1875 – 1933, William David 1878 – 1946, Rosa Lee 1889 – 1950, James Robert 1884 – 1947, Sallie Lou 1886 – 1962, Nannie Boyd 1888 – 1956, Ida Flossie 1892 - 1987, Joseph Creed 1897 – 1956 and one more that pass; that I am assuming as; an infant.

In 1987 I visited with my great aunt Virginia “Virgie” S. “Atkins” Hare in Nebraska; a daughter of George Dunsmore and Lula Venora “Miller” Atkins. She told me stories of the past up on the “mountain”. I do not know exactly where this “mountain” was but she was born in Roanoke so I am assuming in that area; whenever she spoke of home it was always referred to as the “mountain”.

First let me say that “Uncle Creed” was known for his big white beard.

When Virgie was just a little girl; she could not remember her age but she was not attending school yet; her parents were going to be away from the home all day and they gave the children the age old parental ruling “stay in the house, keep the door locked and do not let anyone in”. Well at some point in the day Uncle Creed came a calling, he knocked on the door and the children said their parents were not home. He asked to be let in and the children refused. He explained who he was and again asked to be let in. The children still not knowing who he was; again refused to let him enter. Virgie said that this went on for quit awhile. The more he tried to persuade the children, the more afraid the children became and the more he became angry and frustrated. Eventually he left never gaining entry. When the parents arrived home they asked if anyone had stopped by and the children answered, yes. They asked who it was and the children did not know. They asked if they had opened the door and they replied, no but that he wanted them to. The parents, wondering who it might have been, kept asking questions when all at once little Virgie just blurted out “it was Santa Clause”.

Virgie laughed and laughed at the story claiming she would remember it “just like yesterday till the day I die”.

There has been some confusion with another Zachariah Taylor Atkins in the State of Virginia who had married with Alice V Obenchain Atkins (1856 - 1947) and Nannie Beattie Atkins (1852 - 1900). This Zachariah Taylor is not the son of Joseph Joel Atkins/Adkins (1812 – 1901) and Elizabeth "Betsy" Galaspy/Gillespie (1812 – 1909).

For reference I have provided the census years and places for Zachariah Taylor Creed Atkins the son of Joel Atkins/Adkins (1812 – 1901) and Elizabeth "Betsy" Galaspy/Gillespie (1812 – 1909).
