From the 8/23/1913 Van Wert, Ohio, Daily Times: "Mrs. J.W. Allen, mother of Probate Judge Hugh E. Allen, for many years a most highly esteemed resident of this city, passed to her final reward late Friday evening, after an illness which had lasted but a short time. No funeral arrangements of any kind have been made, everything being held in abeyance until the arrival of Mr. Allen from northern Michigan, where he went last week. He was notified of his mother's condition Friday, but owing to the distance, was unable to arrive before she passed away."
