Glenny Burns Wooten White

Virginia Beach - Passed away on April 10, 2014 in Norfolk, VA, at the age of 91. Glenny was born on June 13, 1922 in Newport News, VA, to the late Harold L. and Glenny S. Burns. She is a life-long resident of the Tidewater Virginia area. She is survived by two sisters, Dorothy Kelly of Winston Salem, NC, and Mary Elizabeth Merrick of Essex Junction, VT.; her son Harold B. Wooten and his wife Nancy; and granddaughters Robin L. Wooten of Stone Mountain, GA, Evey B. Wooten and her partner Marty Weems of Hillsborough, NC, and Gabriele B. Wooten and Emilee K. Wooten of Laytonsville, MD. Her oldest son Kindred A. Wooten, Jr. and her sister Virginia Burns Northington predeceased her. After graduating from Franktown-Nassawadox High School on the Eastern Shore of Virginia in 1939, she completed a two-year business program at Maury High School. She began her career as a medical secretary in Norfolk. For over 20 years, she worked as an executive assistant to the regional director for Sears, Roebuck & Co. Thereafter, she became the church secretary for St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Norfolk, and served on several boards and was a choir member. Following a tradition begun by her grandmother, great aunt, and her mother who were members of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, an organization devoted to the education of women, Glenny was initiated into Chapter L, the first P.E.O. chapter in the Tidewater area. In 1957, she organized Chapter X in Norfolk and served as president for a total of seven years. She was elected to the Virginia State Executive Board in 1967 and served as Virginia State President from 1973-1974. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Her marriage to Kindred A. Wooten, Sr. ended in divorce and she was the widow of Massie B. White. Glenny was cherished for her intelligence, southern hospitality, independence, and warmth.

A visitation will be held on Friday, April 25 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at H. D. Oliver Funeral Home, 2002 Laskin Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23454. The funeral service will be held at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Norfolk on Saturday, April 26 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the P.E.O.
