Our mother, Mildred A. Patterson, died on March 2, 2015 at the amazing age of 102. She lived a long, wonderful life that touched the lives of all those who were close to her. She was born in Sunland, California on November 10, 1912 to Alfred Adams II and Netta Eldora Stancliff Adams. She was the 8th of 9 children. Her father was in the olive canning business, and her mother was dedicated to making a wonderful home for their large family.
She attended LaVerne College and UCLA, graduating in 1934 with a teaching credential. Not many teaching jobs were available at that time so she went to work in the office of her father's olive cannery.
Then she met the love of her life, Gordon K. "Pat" Patterson. They married in 1936 and enjoyed 76 ½ years of an adventurous and loving marriage, giving birth to their four children within 5 years, and later deeply loving the spouses they married as her own children. After she had her first child, she became a devoted homemaker and that job lasted 76 years. Her priorities were her husband, her children, and her church.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her second son, William Kelly Patterson "Bill"; her parents and all her siblings: Elmer Robert Adams, Carrie Francis Lancaster, James Quinnell "Quinn" Adams, Lita Mena DeLapp, Frank Adams, Ethel May June, Alfred Adams III, and Nellie Marie Pardieck. She is survived by son John E. Patterson and wife Leeann; Pattric Patterson, her loving daughter-in-law who helped care for her in her last years; daughter Alice M. Encinas and husband Frank Encinas; and daughter Kathleen L. Mabs and husband Donald Mabs. She had 14 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren. She loved each of them in a special way.
She committed her life to the Lord Jesus Christ in her young teen years and served Him faithfully in the church as a Sunday School teacher for 70 years and as Sunday School Superintendent, Vacation Bible School teacher, Chairman of the Board of Education, and on the Governing Board of her church's Preschool and Daycare center. She promoted missions as White Cross Chairman, being active in the Ladies Mission Circle, and was Chairman of the Missions Committee for many years.
She served her community of Strathmore as part of the Garden Club for 12 years. For 6 years she volunteered at the Tulare County TB Sanitarium, shopping for the patients. For several years she also volunteered at the Braille Institute in Los Angeles.
Her favorite pastimes were spending time at the beach, picnicking in the mountains, hiking, wild flower drives, and traveling.
She was an amazing woman who gave her energies to all she did. A loving wife, a caring mother, and one who took delight in all her grandchildren. She had a passion for the adventures of life alongside her dynamic husband. We will miss this special lady, our mother.
We wish to thank all the loving caregivers who cared for her over the years. We give special acknowledgement to these angel caregivers who were with her until the end: Amanda Appleton, Ann Hobbs, Cherie Pompa, Tamatha Gardner, Letty Garcia, and Pamela Greiser.
A viewing will be held Friday, March 13 at 11:30 a.m. at First Patist Church. A funeral service will follow at 12:30 p.m. with burial immediately after at Porterville Cemetery. Dinner will follow at the church.
