Captain Richard Townsend

This morning Captain Richard Townsend, for many years a well-known citizen of our borough, died about 2 o'clock. He had been in feeble health for years, and lost his eyesight entirely about Christmas last, since which time he did not leave his bed. He appeared as well as usual yesterday, but about 8 o'clock last evening he was taken much worse and rapidly grew weaker until the end came. Deceased lived nearly all his life in West Chester, and was a shoemaker by trade. When the war broke out he was one of the first to volunteer, going in the three months service, when he was made a lieutenant. Returning he re-enlisted and was made Captain of Co. E. 12th Penna. He was an industrious, quiet and kindly man, who made many friend(s) and formed numerous acquaintances. He was long a member of General McCall Post, of this place, but of no other organization. Several years he filled the position of tipstave in the Court House. He made his home with his daughter, the wife of Street Superintendent A. M. Eachus. His other children who survive him are: David and Thomas Townsend, West Chester; Edward Townsend, Mr. Major and Mrs. Bagley, Trenton, N.J., and Howard Townsend, an employee in the State printing office at Harrisburg. He was in his 83d year.

TOWNSEND- In West Chester, on March 2, Richard D. Townsend, aged 83 years.

Friends and relatives of the family are invited to attend the funeral services, at the residence of his son-in-law, Abner M. Eachus, 106 West Price Street, on Monday, March 5th, 1894, at 2 o'clock. Interment private.

Owing to the very serious condition of Mrs. Townsend, the funeral of Captain Richard Townsend, the old soldier, who died a few days since, was not attended by McCall Post No. 31. G.A.R., of which the deceased was a member, but the pall-bearers were all selected from the organization. A sheaf of wheat was the only floral decoration. The remains looked very life like and were viewed by a large number of our older citizens. His widow was too ill to be made acquainted of his death until the day of the funeral. It is not thought she can survive him. Mrs. Townsend's illness was so severe that Pastor J. H. Chambers conducted the services in a brief and quiet manner.
