Edmund enlisted in the 4th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Heavy Artillery, Co. C on August 10, 1864. He and thirty-seven other Scituate men in Co. C received their basic training at Galloup's Island, Boston Harbor. In September of 1864, under the command of Lt. Col. William S. King who earlier as a Major in the 35th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry distinguished himself at the battle of Antietam where he was wounded seven times, the 4th Mass. Heavy Artillery was sent to Washington D. C. to do garrison duty in the forts surrounding the capital. On June 17, 1865 the members of the 4th Mass. were honorably mustered out of the United States service.

Edmund returned to Scituate where he continued on as a shoemaker and farmer. He was a member of the George W. Perry Post #31 G.A.R. in Scituate.

The Scituate Historical Society has a photo of him taken during a dedication ceremony of the Soldier and Sailor Monument at Lawson Park in 1917. The photo was taken in front of the G.A.R. Hall with the other post members.
