Jacob Cox, a resident of St. John's Township, came to Harrison County in the fall of 1854, and may well be called a pioneer of the van-guard.

Mr. Cox was born in Montgomery County, Ohio August 26, 1820, and is the son of Abraham and Lydia Cox. His father died in Indiana in about 1848, and his mother in 1838. He arrived in Pottawattamie County, Iowa, October 2, 1852, having been six weeks on the road. He remained in Potawattamie County long enough to raise one crop then moved to Harrison County.

Jacob married Sarah Fox, in June, 1842, she was a native of Indiana and died in June, 1853, leaving a family of five children:

William H. (1843-1863)
James P. (1845-1917) married Barbara Barnett
Nancy (1847-1930) married William Smith.
Catherine (1851- 1937), wife of Elias Owens.
Caroline (1852-1853)

After Sarah's death, Jacob married Hannah Frazier, November 28, 1865.
Jacob and Hannah are the parents of ten children:

Minerva C. (1857-1939) married John A. Brown.
John Isaac (1859-1945) married Ida Pike.
Sarah Elizabeth (1861- ) married Eli Houghton.
Alexander Reese (1863- )
Harvey H. (1865-1948) married Samantha Berry
Charles (1867-1920)
Oscar (1869-1869)
Ada A (1871-1876)
William Fonrose (1876-1961) married Jessie Cox
