He served from 1944 to 1946, part of that time on the USS Navasota. He re-enrolled at Texas A&I in 1946 and received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1948. When Dorothy inherited substantial acreage north of D'Hanis, he became a cattle rancher. He spent many hours working on improving the productivity and beautifying the ranch. In 1992, he and the ranch were recognized by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department for producing one of the finest Whitetail deer in the state. In 1993 the ranch received a certificate for excellence in grazing management of ranchlands, from the Society for Range Management.

He had great love for his family, was devoted to his creator, God, and served his fellow men. He never met a stranger. His legacy is a life well lived, evidenced by his integrity, courage, wonderful sense of humor and service to others. In this life he was a faithful steward of the resource entrusted him by his Creator. Today he walks the fields of Heaven with the One who owns the cattle on a thousand hills.
