Russ grew up in West Duluth and enlisted in the Marines prior to his graduation in 1944 from Denfeld High School. He married his high school sweetheart, Karin (Peterson) Dahl on August 14, 1948, in Bethany Lutheran Church, Duluth. Russ served 2 years active duty in the 4th Marine Corps Division, then attended Duluth Junior College for a year, graduating from Michigan Technical College with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. After College, Russ and Karin settled in Mt. Iron, where they raised their five children. Russ worked for U.S. Steel at Extacta and Minntac, and then in 1981 at Atlantic City, Lander, WY. Russ retired as Superintendent of Western Ore Operations for U. S. Steel on June 25, 1984, after 33 dedicated years. In 2002, they returned to Duluth to be closer to their family.
Russ was an avid outdoorsman and most of all loved time with his family and the cabin on Lake Vermillion. He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, Lions, VFW, and a life member of the NRA.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Karin; daughter Barbara; parents; and 11 brothers and sisters.
Russell is survived by his sons: Charles (Sharlyn), and Gordon (Sandra); daughters: Sharon (Mark) Eskola, and Nancy Dahl; 9 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and his fiancé Audrey Neiss.
Interment was at Greenwood Cemetery, Virginia
