Silas L. Baird, 76, Ky. 39, Somerset, died at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.
Born July 25, 1924, in Preachersville, Ky., he was a son of the late Verna Hammonds and Silas L. Baird. He was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army where he was decorated with a Silver Star medal with two clusters, a Bronze Star medal with three clusters and a Purple Heart. He was a retired plumber; a member of Union No. 469 and Burnett Chapel Methodist Church where he served as a church trustee.
Survivors include his wife, Hazel Broyles Baird; a son, Sam (and Patty) Baird, Phoenix, Ariz.; a daughter, Sandra (and Bruce) Smith, San Francisco, Calif.; a brother, Calvin Baird, Signal Mountain, Tenn; a sister, Georgia Ballard, Lancaster, Ky.; three grandchildren, Amy Brown, Phoenix, Jonathan Baird, Fort Bragg, N.C., and Adam Smith, Annapolis, Md.; and a great-granddaughter, Samantha Brown.
Preceding him in death were his parents, two brothers, William Jess Baird and Leonard Baird; and a sister, Ruby Thompson.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 4, at Burnett Chapel Methodist Church with the Rev. C.E. Hansford officiating.
Burial will be in Burnett Chapel Cemetery with military services by American Legion Post No. 38.
Friends may call after 5 p.m. today at Somerset Undertaking Co.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Kidney Foundation.
