Adonijah was a Sergeant in the 21st Infantry Regiment in the War of 1812. He fought in most of the major battles of the Canadian Theatre. He was 5'10" blue-eyed with brown hair and a light complexion. He was a carpenter at the time of enlistment according to his discharge papers. He received 160 acres of bounty land in northern Illinois for his services in the military, which he later transferred to his son Asahel, sometimes spelled Asel or Acel.
