FARMER CITY – Harrold N. Miller, 91, of Farmer City passed away at 11:35 p.m. Tuesday (May 26, 2015) at Farmer City Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 4, at Calvert-Belangee-Bruce Funeral Home, Farmer City, with Pastor Jeremiah Thompson officiating. Burial with military rites accorded will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Farmer City. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with a Masonic Service following at 8 p.m.
Memorials may be made to Farmer City Little League or Farmer City Volunteer Fire Department.
Harrold was born March 18, 1924, in Farmer City, a son of Welby and Minnie Johnson Miller. Harrold married Evelyn Amdor on Aug. 6, 1950, in Farmer City. They were married for 54 years. She preceded him in death on Oct. 8, 2004.
He graduated from Moore Township High School in Farmer City in 1943. While attending, he earned 16 letters in athletics over four years.
Upon graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and volunteered for the U.S. Merchant Marines. During World War II, he served in the European Theater and the Pacific.
Upon returning home, he was employed by the Farmer City Electrical Department where he worked for 38 years, retiring as superintendent of the department.
Harrold was a lifetime member of the Joe Williams American Legion Post 55, Farmer City. He just received his 70-year membership pin.
He also was a lifetime member of Fred G. O'Malley VFW Post 6190, Farmer City. He was a lifetime member of Farmer City Masonic Lodge 710 A.F.&A.M., and lifetime member of the Kenilworth Lodge No. 60 Knights of Pythias, Farmer City.
He was a volunteer for 20-plus years for the Farmer City Fire Department. During this time, Harrold and Gene Holt gave up their Christmas Eve to deliver presents to children in Farmer City on the firetruck. He was also Santa Claus for 30 years in Farmer City.
Harrold was an avid local sports fan, attending every Farmer City football game for 54 years. In 2011, he was inducted to the Wall of Fame at the high school.
Harrold was a great supporter of the Farmer City Youth Groups. He collected cans to support Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Farmer City Little League.
Harrold was involved with the Illinois Senior Olympics. He earned over 40 medals in shot put, discus and javelin. At age 85, he won gold medals in all three events.
Harrold is survived by two sons, Austin F. (Susan) Miller of Farmer City and Walter E. Miller of Farmer City; four grandchildren, Laura Miller of Chicago, Phillip (Tara) Miller of Champaign, Wyatt Miller of Los Angeles, Calif., and Kayla Miller of Fisher; four great-grandchildren, Katherine Miller, Molly Miller, Zoey Carleton and Avery Carleton; two brothers, Joe Miller of Bloomington and Maurice "Pedo" Miller of Farmer City; and one sister, Margaret Brown of Peoria, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Miller; son, Bruce W. Miller; parents; two brothers, Francis Miller and Hal "Jack" Miller; and two sisters, Rosemary Miller and Marietta Martin.
Harrold was kind and a gentleman, who will be missed by family and friends.
