The Reverend Phillip M. Stevenson, Jr. passed away on Thursday, May 28, 2015. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Evelyn James Stevenson; a son, Phillip Stevenson III; a grandson, James Paul Stevenson and a granddaughter, Christina Howe. His daughter, Eve Howe preceded him in death in 2013.

The Reverend Mr. Stevenson was born in Groveton, Texas, January 28, 1928 to parents, Phillip M. Stevenson, Sr. and Alma Agee Stevenson.

Phillip attended Lamar High School in Houston, Texas, where he was a member of St. John the Divine Episcopal Church.

He was married to his wife, Evelyn in 1950.
He received his Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Texas at Austin and his Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1952.

Following admission to the Texas Bar Association, Mr. Stevenson enlisted in the United States Air Force. He served as an officer in their JAG Department. During his military service Mr. Stevenson was stationed at Parks Air Force Base in Livermore, CA, attended the Air University for advanced training in Montgomery, AL, and served at the Far East Air Force headquarters in Tokyo, Japan. In later years, he attained the rank of Captain in the Air Force Reserve.

After returning to Texas at the end of his military service, Phillip chose to return to his birthplace and worked there as an attorney at his own Stevenson Abstract and Title Co. for the next decade and was eventually elected Mayor of Groveton, Texas. He was fourth-generation lawyer in his family.

During those years in Tokyo he met many missionaries to Japan who deeply impressed and influenced his spiritual life.

After the death of his father and that of Pres. John F. Kennedy, Phillip reexamined his spiritual commitments and made the decision to attend the Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley, CA, to receive his Master of Divinity degree. He was ordained in the Diocese of Texas at St. Cyprian Episcopal Church in Lufkin, Texas.

His first mission was St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church in Killeen, Texas, a military community during the Vietnam War. They became a parish six months after Phillip arrived.
After ordination to the priesthood, the Rev. Mr. Stevenson accepted a call to St. Andrew Episcopal Church in San Antonio, Texas, where he served 25 years. They also attained parish status under his guidance. His ministry there was extraordinarily active and powerful. He was strongly evangelistic and his pastoral gifts were extremely effective as well. His encouragement, support and nurture of lay leadership bore fruits which reached around the globe and continue today.

He served his diocese as well as his parishioners with great integrity and dedication. He was Chairman of the Constitutions and Canon Committee for many years and made his Cursillo #8 in 1972 and served as Diocesan Spiritual Director of the Cursillo Movement for several years as well.

After “retirement” Phillip took a position as Vicar of St. Boniface Episcopal Church in Comfort, Texas, where he served for the next 14 years. He saw the church, under his watch, move to new ground as the first phase of a complete architectural plan.

After a second “retirement” Phillip served as interim rector at the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany in Kingsville, Texas, and St. Francis Episcopal Church in San Antonio, Texas.

Evelyn and Phillip subsequently moved into quarters at Morningside Ministries, Menger House in Boerne, Texas. Six months after settling in, Phillip was elected President of the Resident’s Association. Active life was continued with his family until his recent illness.

Phillip was a fine priest and a compassionate pastor. A parish member once proclaimed, “His sermons are life-changing!”

He was equally a fine husband, father and grandfather. His family loves and treasures the years God granted them with this remarkable man.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, May 31, 2015 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Porter Loring Mortuary on McCullough Ave.
