Eugene N. Kessinger was born April 6, 1852 in Grant County, Indiana. He was the son of George W. and Leah (Wilkins) Kessinger. He was joined in matrimony with Sarah Amanda Green on May 16, 1874. She was the daughter of John and Ann Jane Green and was born May 12, 1851, in Grant County, Indiana. The George W. Kessingers and John Greens moved to Cowley County, Kansas, in 1880 and 1881.

The Eugene Kessingers with their belongings made the trip from Indiana to Wichita by train in 1878. They settled on a farm in the Rainbow Bend area south and west of Winfield. Mrs. Kessinger continued farming after the death of Mr. Kessinger in 1893. Mrs. Kessinger was left with nine children. They ranged in ages from one to seventeen. She farmed in the Gueda Springs, Udall, Maple Creek and Central school areas. She sold her farm implements and livestock in December, 1917. After the sale she lived with her son, Clyde, for several years. Later she moved to Mulvane and was joined by her sons, Cary and Robert, and daughter, Myrta.

Mrs. Kessinger died in 1941. They are buried in the Tannehill Cemetery south and west of Winfield.

Mrs. Kessinger has told many stories relating to her early days in Kansas concerning Indians, gypsies and the Dalton brothers.

Mrs. Kessinger is survived by many descendants; her children were: Oreisa E., Absolom Carey; Leah J.; Willie Clyde married Myrtle Schaper; Myrta Mae married Jeffe Walton; Eugene Burr married Jennie Taylor; Robert Stewart; Jesse married Effie Cooper; Cresse Ernest married Esther Bland; Arthur L. married Minnie Waterman and Virgil married Jessie Howard.
