Alex was born in 1936 to the late Gene and Hazel Alexander at their home near Granger, Mo. The Alexanders moved to Mt. Sterling, Iowa, during Alex's eighth month of first grade. School was completed in Keosauqua, Iowa, where he graduated in 1954. Alex earned a bachelor's degree in business education, a master's degree in social work and a master's degree in business. He held several fulltime and part-time jobs up until his death, most notably retiring as a major from the United States Army.
Alex was preceded in death by his oldest son, Russell Alexander, who died in October of 2009 from lung cancer.
He will be greatly missed by family and friends.
Alex will be missed by his most devoted and loving wife, whom he loved dearly, Carolyn of Midway; daughter and son-in-law, Leona and Dean Martin of Richmond, Va.; son and daughter-in-law, Wythe and Barbara Alexander of Hinesville; daughter-in-law, Terri Alexander, surviving wife of Russell of Washington state; and five grandchildren, the oldest in college in Washington state.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
The memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 13, am at Midway United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dan Pegram and Brenda Crawford officiating. Burial will be at the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Glennville with full military honors being rendered.
The family has requested that remembrances be made to the Midway United Methodist Church, 215 Martin Road, Midway, GA 31320, or the American Cancer Society .
