Matilda's father was Nathaniel Preston. In Nathaniel's pension file there is a mention of Matilda's husband Brackin Lewis paying a debt of Nathaniel's. Matilda also named one son "Nathan Preston Lewis," and Brackin's obituary specifically names her as a daughter of Nathaniel. Matilda's mother was Elizabeth Vaughan. The Prestons were originally from Virginia; the earliest record of them in Kentucky is the 1810 census.
Matilda married Brackin L. Lewis on 23 December 1819 in Floyd County. Their first nine (or so) children were born in Kentucky before they, along with many other related Floyd County families, moved to Vermilion County, Illinois, in the early 1830s for about one year. Finally they settled in Washington County, Arkansas, by 1836.
Once in Arkansas, Brackin and Matilda had another seven children for a grand total of 16, most of whom lived to adulthood: George Washington, Henry, Elizabeth, Edy, Nathan Preston, Rachel, Lydia, Moses Daniel, Emiline, Peter, Julia, Sarah, Zachariah, John S., Eliphus, and Milly (or Ann). (Source: Pioneer Lewis Families by Michael Cook, volume 5, group 333 and the aforementioned census.)
In Brackin's 1891 obituary, Matilda is described by Brackin's nephew as "noted for her beauty and amiable disposition and could justly lay claim to being the belle of the Big Sandy Valley. She was lovely in person and more lovely in disposition, and their home was one of the happiest homes in Arkansas, and no one who, like the writer, has in days long gone enjoyed their royal hospitality can ever forget the pleasures of that quiet peaceful home."
According to Goodspeed's History of Northwest Arkansas, in the entry for her son George, Matilda died in 1883. Despite the efforts of volunteers, no stone has been found that marks her grave, and the fact of her burial here comes from an earlier enumeration of the cemetery.
